This township, more than 125 years old, owes its existence to the cedargetters and sawmillers. But now it’s the tourist operators - and their visitors - who keep it alive.
Today Canungra extends its hospitality to its many visitors through its hotel, motel, and caravan park.
Close to town, tourists can enjoy farmstays, bed and breakfasts, cabin accommodation and vineyards.
Many visitors also stop at Canungra en route to the Lamington National Park and the mountain resorts of Binna Burra and O’Reilly’s.
Situated on the Beaudesert-Nerang Road, near the picturesque Canungra Creek, Canungra has become the main service centre for the south-eastern part of the Shire.
It serves a community of more than 2500 people, plus personnel from the nearby Australian Army barracks.
Community facilities include a primary school, post office, ambulance, police, fire brigade, doctors, chemists, dentists, veterinary surgery, service stations, garages, TAB, hardware store, baker, butcher, second-hand stores, electrical stores, hairdressers, fruit and vegetable store, supermarket, newsagent, video shop, real estate agent, RSL, laundromat, pottery shop, clothing store, café and swimming pool.
The three main sports in the town are hang gliding, pony club and lawn bowls.
